Superelastic nitinol is capable of stretching up to 30% of its length without permanent deformation. It is resistant to most harsh chemicals, does not corrode, and retains superior mechanical strength for your most demanding applications.

If you are looking for wire that moves when heated, go to our shape memory alloy wire page.

This material is super elastic at above freezing temperatures and it will not change its shape upon application of heat. If you are looking for wire that changes shape upon application of heat, use the link above.

Select from Regular temperature, Low Temperature, or Ultra Low temperature alloys. Below the indicated temperature, the wire becomes soft and much more malleable than above this temperature. For best mechanical performance when you need a springy, high tensile strength wire, select a wire with the temperature a little below the temperature that you intend to use the wire at.

Operational Temperature

Nitinol exhibits different mechanical properties dependent on the temperature of the wire.

  • Standard ASTM F2065 — most commonly used, ideal for room temperature and high temperature uses requiring a stiff, high tensile strength, elastic wire at all temperatures above freezing.
  • Low Temp — For equipment planned to be operated exposed to below freezing temperatures, this wire retains the austenite (high tensile strength) state down to -4°F (-20°C).
  • Ultra Low Temp — for equipment planned to be operated exposed to the most frigid environments. At approximately below -30°C (-22F), the wire begins to transition to its martensite state, making it more pliable. The wire will be more prone to creep, exhibit lower UTS and lower yield stress.

Tip: a Standard temp wire will have better elasticity properties (higher recoverability without plastic deformation at greater stresses), at higher temperatures, compared to the lower temperature variants.

Tip #2: operated below the operation temperature, the wire becomes martensite (soft and malleable). In this state, it exhibits superior fatigue strength (will not crack despite many cycles of deformation).

Characteristics

The wire has a lustrous titanium color (dark grey) with a bluish oxide tint on its surface. When freshly cut, the inner core is nickel white. Nitinol is very abrasion resistant and has self-healing properties, so the wire is quite hard to cut and kink. It does not require any special handling or protections from oxidation or moisture, and is non-toxic.

Bulk Purchasing Options

  • Bulk order pricing begins at the kilogram (2.2 Lbs) order size. By selecting kg, the effective per-foot price is significantly reduced as you are purchasing the material by weight. Smaller diameter wires will cost more by weight due to the more demanding processing required to draw small diameter wires.
  • If there is less material in stock than what you intend to order, the production time to fulfill your order is approximately 30 days.
  • For orders in excess of 5 kilograms (10 Lbs), please reach out to us via chat, email, or phone, so we can offer further discounted rates and optimize your production schedule.
